Composer: Paul Burnell Title: Speak Your Mind, Compromise-Barter, Trust Instrumentation: Fl, Ob, Cl, Hn, Bsn Duration: 4 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Technical Issues: The three movements involve the different instruments playing in sub-groups in accord or in conflict with one another. The third movement may be played as a short piece, or in a longer version. Programme note: The piece tries to represent in musical language aspects of the political process. The starting point was a famous quote from the 18th century politician William Burke: "All government, indeed every human benefit and enjoyment, every virtue, and every prudent act, is founded on compromise and barter. " [Speech on Conciliation with America ] The idea of compromise-barter (the title of the second movement) did not in itself suggest to me all that was required for a successful political outcome, and so I tried to suggest the ideas of 'Speak Your Mind' and 'Trust' in the other two sections.
