Composer:
Louis Andriessen
Title:
'Je Vois Une Ortie Dans L'Herbe' (1998)
Instrumentation:
Flexible
Duration:
Variable but short
Difficulty:
Moderate
Technical Issues:
The instrumentation is not stated but rather is 'for unspecified instruments'. The players are asked to play the single melodic line in an quiet unsynchronised manner and not to play too slow. The resulting soft hazy sound is interrupted half way through by loud piercing chords (perhaps this is a musical interpretation of seeing a nettle). The soft ensemble sound then resumes and eventually fades away.

Programme note:

Louis Andriessen (born 1939, Utrecht, Holland) is one of Europe's most eminent and influential composers. His music often combines propulsive energy with economy of material whilst the soundworld he employs is often dominated by distinctive wind and brass sonorities, pianos and electric guitars.

Je Vois Une Ortie Dans L'Herbe (I see a nettle in the grass) was written in 1998 and performed at the 'Tom Johnson Festival' in the Netherlands. The piece is in fact dedicated to Tom Johnson - an American composer and writer who has lived in Paris since 1983. The score is annotated with the words "it does rain a little bit also".
