Barney Ellis
Instrumentation:
fl, on, cl, hn, bsn
Duration:
4 minutes
Difficulty:

Programme note:

This work is an introduction to a pastische of the 16th century motet style, the theme of which is loosely based on a North Eastern folk song 'Elsie Marley'. The composer, a music graduate of Edinburgh university, harks from County Durham.

The opening uses the horn as soloist accompanied by 'pairs' of instruments. The flute and clarinet maintain the triplet momentum against the bassoon and oboe sustained notes. A short link, inspired by a spider walking across the page (!) leads to the motet. Each instrument taking its turn to play the melody and a counter subject taken from the horn part of the opening.
