Composer: Stephen Montague Title: Thule Ultima Instrumentation: Fl, ob, cl, hn, bsn Duration: 3 minutes Difficulty: Harder Technical Issues: Apart from the final chord, the piece is played entirely with the mouthpieces or reeds of the instruments, and involves a series of techniques for obtaining different sounds from these. The score contains a full explanation of the notation used. Programme note: Thule Ulitima is a Roman word for the most distant regions, remote and foreign territories. This work explores a few foreign territories and distant regions of the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and horn and along the way discivers a few unusual sounds. It was commissioned in 1999 for the Chamber Music Exchange by Thalia Myers. Availability: From BMIC, the publisher |
