Composer: David Penri-Evans Title: Textures Instrumentation: Wind quintet: Fl Ob Cl in Bb Hn in F Bsn Duration: 5 minutes Difficulty: Good amateur Technical Issues: The piece alternates sections of long chords, with players needing to time their entrances carefully, with some quite demandng solos. Programme note: David Penri-Evans was commissioned to write Textures in 1990 by Louisiana State University New Music Ensemble while he was guest composer at the Louisiana Festival of Contemporary Music. The first, third, and fifth sections of the piece form a sort of woven backcloth, like a tapestry in which the different instruments pick out flecks of colour. The second section is an oboe solo, and the fourth is a clarinet solo. David studied composition in America under Dinos Constantinides, and his music is performed widely in the USA and Europe. Textures is available on CD. It was performed by the London Chamber Group at BMIC in December 1996, and again at the Conway Hall, June 1998. Availability:from the composer |
