Composer: Ralph Hays Title: Suite for Woodwind Quintet Instrumentation: fl, ob, cl, hn, bsn Duration: 5 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Programme note: The Quintet has three movements: Waltz, Meditation, and Fugue. The Waltz is in rondo form, and was inspired by a ride with my children on a carousel that went a little too fast for my predisposition toward motion sickness. It is meant to sound like the waltz played on a carousel, with it's fluctuating asymmetric rhythms invoking a sense of playfulness, the unexpected, and an irreverence to the traditional waltz. The second movement, Meditation, is introspective in nature. It features the oboe and horn as soloists, and is intended as a plaintive prayer for peace. Fugue follows the form, and embodies the techniques associated with J.S. Bach, yet it journeys down alternate harmonic paths, liberated from the constraints of the 18th century.
