Roderick Starr
Title:
Entwined
Instrumentation:
fl, ob, cl, hn, bsn
Duration:
5 minutes
Difficulty:
Moderate
Programme note:

Entwined consists of two main themes. The first enters in the third bar and is based on a syncopated rhythm played by bassoon, which is then taken up by the flute. The oboe and clarinet use the rhythm to add accompaniment. The second theme, announced by the bassoon and horn, is preceded by a passage in triple time of upward moving arpeggios shared between the instruments. As the title implies, the themes entwine as the music progresses whilst other rhythmic are heard in the form of triplets and semiquaver passages. The pulsing crotchets which start the piece maintain a rhythmic intensity throughout.

The quintet uses ideas derived from serial technique, without using a twelve-tone row, in that the harmony is to a certain extent regulated by the musical lines. Much of the work has atonal implications and the resultant dissonant harmonies create areas of motivic convergence.
