Verses and Choruses was written in the Spring of 1998 and was commissioned by the London Chamber Group with funds from the Arts for Everyone scheme, and premiered by them at the Conway Hall, June 1998. It was performed again by the London Chamber Group at the Conway Hall in May 1999. It is in three movements

Joe Cutler was born in London in 1968 and studied music at Huddersfield Polytechnic and at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw with the help of a Polish Government Scholarship. His work encompasses concert music, as well as music for film, dance, and theatre. Recent performances have been at the London South Bank Centre, Huddersfield Festival, Warsaw Autumn, and Dresden New Music Days, while performers have included the London Sinfionetta, Delta Saxophone Quartet, and the Dutch ensemble "de Ereprijs". He was awarded the 1990 Ricordi Prize, the 1992 Olympia International Prize, and a special mention at the 1997 Gaudeamus International Music Week in Amsterdam.
