Composer: Tim Rumsey Title: Five Sketches Instrumentation: fl, ob, cl, hn, bsn Duration: 5 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Programme note: The Five Sketches depict disturbances - things out of the ordinary - common to all living creatures. In Skipping Time, the repetitive ticking of a clock is interrupted by something - perhaps the arrival of a new life? Out of the Womb describes the abrupt entrance into a harsh new world experienced by a newborn baby. The third movement, First Flight represents not only the struggling attempts of a fledgling bird but the experimental 'spreading of wings' by all young growing creatures. No Trees in the Forest reminds us that, even after we learn to fly, our path may be a rough one, and we may not always find a place to land. Finally, Five Sketches concludes the circle of life with Funeral Dance, an unusual but appropriate way to celebrate a life lived through many disturbances. Availability:the composer |
