Composer: Paul Burnell Title: Unicycle 1 Instrumentation: Wind quintet: fl, ob, cl, hn, bsn, optional contra bsn part Duration: 3-4 minutes Difficulty: Good amateur Technical Issues: Horn parts high in places, but should lie 'under the fingers' for most instruments most of the time. Slow introduction - flute should not feel bound by the notated rhythms. Extended unison passage - clarinet could lead here. Final section - necessary to keep to indicated fast tempo. Programme note: This is a single-movement work in a light hearted mood, with the flute supplying a melodic contrast to the mechanistic figures in the other instruments. Paul Burnell came late to composition after a period of studying music. Other compositions performed include an oboe sonatina, a flute quartet, an organ piece and a vocal work From Blake's Milton performed by the London COMA ensemble at the Spitalfields Festival in 1995. In October, the Black Dyke Mills brass band workshopped another short piece - Two Postcards, One View. Unicycle 1 was performed in December 1996, BMIC, and at the Conway Hall in November 1998, by the London Chamber Group. Availability: from the composer |
