Composer: Sarah Tuakli Title: (Para)fanalia No. 3 Open. Eclipsed Instrumentation: Fl, ob, cl, hn, bsn Duration: 5 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Programme note: Sarah studied composition at Trinity College with John Tavener, whose main concern was how she could be a composer if she had no private income, so she spawned two extra mouths to feed, which put paid to that idea. Having spent 15 years teaching other people to play with gadgets in the studio to make money to feed the extra mouths, she has finally got back to the central question of not having a private income. This pieces is written for quintet and a tape of the electronically processed sounds of the quintet - in this case amplification and signal processing. The aim is to widen the timbral spectrum of this familiar sound world. The central idea opens out, only to eclipse, like a fan. It uses common techniques to explore how a little technology can enhance rather than supplant the original sounds. Availability:E-mail the composer |
