In Remembrance of a Passing Generation
Wind nonet
8 minutes
Difficulty level: Moderate
In August 2003 my aunt in California died. She was one of the last of a remarkable
generation who had come through the Depression and the Second World war, from a poor
but stable background into a world of riches and instability. They were the children of an
adventurous and innovatory family, members of which had travelled the world in search of
work, but always retained a strong sense of moral purpose and family closeness.
The piece begins with the harmonies, and fragments of melody, from the musical
background of my childhood - English hymn music. It sets out on a journey through many
different places - with the music is always related to the opening - before finally reaching
somewhere very different.
