This piece was originally written in 1999. At the time a violent struggle was taking place in East Timor, culminating in the people voting for independence in the face of murderous intimidation. This was followed by the despoliation of the country by the occupying forces, but finally by their withdrawal.The piece is not descriptive, but the three movements represent a response to this successful struggle.
