My piece, 'For the People of East Timor', was written in 1999. At the time a violent struggle was taking place in East Timor, culminating in the people voting for independence in the face of murderous intimidation. This was followed by the despoliation of the country by the occupying forces, but finally by their withdrawal. This is an arrangement of the middle movement. It was played in the presence of the Foreign Minister of newly independent East Timor during a visit he made to the USA.
