Baffled by the task of trying to think of a title for this piece, I became aware of the way the musical ideas which it explores arrive repeatedly at points of breakdown and recommencement, but finally peter out. I therefore chose the title which it now has. This piece was written for a composers’ workshop organized by the Sarum Orchestra in July 2010. I am grateful for the invaluable feedback from the musicians who played it there.
