"Beauty's nothing but the beginning of terror we're still just able to bear." - Rainer Maria Rilke. First Duino Elegy
The piece is based on the Concerto Grosso principle of the alternation of tutti orchestral passages, and chamber music with a small group of soloists. It consists of five miniatures, and in each the concertino group is a trio with a different membership. The miniatures should be played with short breaks between them, allowing any sound marked as hanging over, for instance a piano chord, to die before the next miniature is commenced. Instrumentation: 1111 1110 piano, percussion, strings
