Writing for amateur groups

For amateur groups it is important to produce a piece which will engage their enthusiasm, as well as writing an artistically challenging piece within the technical limitations of the performers. There is the possibility, in larger groups, of uncertain or changing instrumentation.

I have found writing for specific amateur groups very stimulating, and I would welcome further opportunities to work with such groups. I do not charge for this, since I see it as both a privilege and a stimulus to writing.

  • Southwark Consorts of Winds - Voices - a piece for a 9-line wind chamber ensemble
  • South Region COMA - Aftershocks, a piece flexibly scored for 4 line large ensemble with percussion. Most lines divide at points, and there are opportunities for solos.
  • The London Chamber Group - a wind quintet written to draw on the particular strengths of the players in the Group. Similarly, Violin, clarinet, and cello trio written for another of the ensembles in the Group.
  • The Friendly Local Orchestra - for chamber orchestra. The piece is written for flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, with an optional piano part. The orchestra are in Leeds, UK. The piece gives every possible pair of melody instruments in the ensemble a duet to play while the rest of the ensemble are alternately silent or provide supporting harmony.
  • East Midlands COMA Ensemble - for medium to large scale flexible ensemble. Worked on with the Ensemble over a year, and played through by them in draft form. Very simple material, with the conductor taking control of the timing of events.
  • East London Late Starters Orchestra - a piece relying entirely on three very simple special effects - playing slightly out of tune, "white" noise with no pitch, and violent double stops. One the players master these effects, the piece is very easy.
  • City Lit Basic String Ensemble - a piece for beginner string orchestra, largely of grade 2 or 3 players. Giving them some challenges such as playing in 5/4, and divisi playing for the 1st violins, but otherwise an arrangement of a simple pentatonic melody.
  • Southwark Concert Band - a piece for concert wind band, using the full forces of the band, but requiring the players to make use of many extended techniques which they may not previously have encountered.
  • COMA London Ensemble - an improvisation for flexible ensemble, written for the London COMA Ensemble and premiered by them in December 1998. It was also perfomed by the Yorkshire COMA ensemble in May 1999.
  • Repetitiousness Piano Duo Players of New York A set of five 5 minute piano duos requested by the group, to be premiered by them late in 1999.
  • New Music North East A piece for two pianists and a flexibly instrumented orchestra, written to for the membership of the group. Performed by them in May 1999.
  • City Lit Advanced String Ensemble - a three movement piece offering string ensembles an little taste of some of the harmonic and other aspects of contemporary music.
  • Wind Group in Basingstoke, UK A piece with 8 lines, playable on a wide variety of wind, or other instruments, where some of the lines can be omitted if there are too few players. Performed at the Oxford Festival, in Nottingham, and by the London Chamber Group.
  • COMA London Ensemble A piece with 31 instrumental lines, some of which can be omitted with plenty of scope for instrumental substitution.
  • Newbury College Late Starters Orchestra A piece which divides the orchestra into three groups, enabling each player contribute while being re-infornced by others in their group. Premiered by the orchestra at Burghfield Church, Berkshire.
  • Southwark Sinfionetta A 12 minute piece for chamber orchestra, premiered by the group in November 1998.
  • Flute Choir A seven part piece for a flute choir for a group in London.
